Michelle de Kretser was born in Sri Lanka and migrated to Australia at the age of 14.  Educated in Melbourne and Paris, she taught English at the University of Melbourne, and went on to work as an editor and book reviewer before publishing her first novel in 1999. Her most recent novel, The Lost Dog, was awarded or listed for several awards, including the Man Booker and Orange prizes. She now lives in Sydney.
