Ru Freeman was born in Colombo. A former dancer, Ru spent a year studying informally at the Murdoch University, Perth, before she moved to the U.S.A to attend Bates College in Maine. She has a Master’s degree in Labour Relations from the University of Colombo, and has worked extensively in the field of American and international humanitarian assistance and workers’ rights. Her political writing has appeared in English and in translation. Her creative writing has been published or is forthcoming in publications such as Guernica, Story Quarterly, Crab Orchard Review, WriteCorner Press and Kaduwa. Her work was nominated for the Best New American Voices anthologies in 2006 and 2008. Freeman’s debut novel, A Disobedient Girl (2009) has received great praise. Lynn Freed, the author of The Servant’s Quarters calls it, “A thrilling debut: Ru Freeman has given us a wonderfully bold and determined protagonist in a richly drawn, complex, fascinating story.” She currently lives in New York. http://rufreeman.com - Ru Freeman's website.
