Tulika is a small, independent publishing house whose imaginatively created books have, since 1996, pioneered a new wave of children’s publishing in India. Committed to addressing the needs of children growing up in a multilingual and pluralistic society, Tulika’s books come in single and dual language editions, cover a range of social milieus, and include the experiences of different kinds of children. It’s over 200 titles for the age group 0 to 16 years has something for everyone – from fairytales stood on their heads to creative nonfiction, from grandma’s tales with fresh new perspectives to artists’ perceptions of the world around, from original fiction to real environmental concerns, and much more. The visual language is as diverse, enriched with folk and tribal art, street art, photography and digital art, the traditional side by side with the contemporary. Tulika books are published in English, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Bangla, Marathi, Gujarati, Urdu, Oriya and Punjabi. My Friend, the Sea bagged a special prize at the Berliner Kinder- und Jugendbuchpreis 2005, and My Mother’s Sari, was selected as an outstanding international book in the USA, 2007. A picture book on Partition, Mukand and Riaz, was published simultaneously in India and Pakistan in 2007. Gifted and sensitive writers and illustrators have helped Tulika evolve a body of literature that is also a shared cultural space reflecting a sense of the universal. Imbued with the spirit of the child’s questioning mind, Tulika’s books are for all children, equally, and speak in many voices.
