British-born Richard Boyle arrived in Sri Lanka as a film-maker and scripted and produced the movies East of Elephant Rock (1976) and Rampage (1977), plus documentaries for UN agencies and NGOs. Abandoning the visual image, he began to research and write about Sri Lanka’s history and culture, particularly the British colonial era. His essays and reviews have appeared in such UK publications as The Times Higher Education Supplement and Bookdealer, and in Sri Lanka in The Sunday Times and Serendib. In 2000, he began to assist the Oxford English Dictionary in the revision of words of Sri Lankan origin, which resulted in the glossary Knox’s Words (2004). In 2005 he became a trustee of the Gratiaen Trust, which administrates Michael Ondaatje’s Gratiaen Prize. His latest book is Sindbad in Serendib: Strange Tales and Curious Aspects of Sri Lanka (2008). He’s now working on a collection of film essays, There Should Have Been Ghosts, But Weren’t.
Richard Boyle will be featured at the following events:
Saturday 30 January, 12.30- 1.30 PM, Maritime Museum: Lighthouses and Landings II
