Iranganie Serasinghe was born in rural Sri Lanka, a fact she says has been immensely valuable in her stage and cinema work. Her education was entirely in English, in Colombo and Kandy. She joined the Ceylon theatre scene under the guidance of Professor Ludowyck and later travelled to London and Bristol to study theatre. She began working in theatre with renowned directors such as Henry Jayasena and Dhamma Jagoda. Lester James Pieris cast her in 'Rekhava', which became an icon of Sri Lankan cinema history. Iranganie Serasinghe’s five decades of acting have included critically acclaimed films both in Sri Lanka and abroad, as well very popular teledramas, but she says her heart is in environmental conservation. She is a founder member of Ruk Rakaganno, which is firmly committed to the conservation of forests and the biodiversity of Sri Lanka.
