We are excited to welcome Ex-Royal Marine, Arctic Explorer and Maritime Adventurer Dom Mee to the 2017 Fairway Galle Literary Festival.

2017 Fairway Galle Literary Festival - Adventurer and Author Dom Mee.

Dom left home at 17 to join the Royal Marines and, one year later, headed across the Atlantic on a warship bound for the Caribbean. This was the start of a love affair with the ocean that would take him on some extraordinary life adventures.

His 2001 bid to row across the North Pacific (Dom and fellow Marine Tim Welford rowed for 138 days before being run down by a trawler) is now a documentary for the BBC Extreme Lives series.

Dom’s Arctic expeditions (solo in 2003 and with his team in 2004), where he kayaked to the North Magnetic Pole, made historical discoveries and found the remains of Victorinan explorer, Sir John Ross’s ship ‘The Victory’ which was lost in the ice for 170 years, is a documentary on the National Geographic Channel.

Kiting the Hurricane’ (2015) is Dom Mee’s first book is about his 2005 undertaking of an epic adventure-the world’s first attempt to cross the Atlantic ocean in a kite-powered boat.

Kiting the Hurricane by Dom Mee.

Heading out into the Atlantic on his 14ft boat “Little Murka”, Dom had no idea that 2005 was going to be the most powerful hurricane season in history, and became trapped on the notorious Grand Banks enduring the tail end of 5 hurricanes before being overcome by Hurricane Rita … the 4th most intense Atlantic hurricane in history!

Kiting the Hurricane is a story of pioneering adventure, failure, survival and ultimate triumph against all the odds.

Dom founded a maritime security company PVI in response to the threat to world shipping from Somali pirates. With his unique passion and drive, experience of taking risks and team work he achieved a turnover of 70 million in just four years.

After retiring in 2012, Dom started a family business in the tourist sector in Sri Lanka with Kew Villas and is an adviser on maritime and regional security.

He is writing two further books on his adventures.
