Do not miss this colourful annual religious pageant in the heart of Colombo on October 16th 2016.
The glorious ‘Esala Perahara of the Walukarama Maha Viharaya’, is a prominent religious festival which takes place in Colombo every year.
This year the colourful Perahara (pageant) will be parading the streets for the 53rd consecutive year, on October 16th, 2016 under the guidance of the chief priest of Colombo Division, The Venerable Maharagama Nanda Thera.
Walukarama, renowned as the oldest Buddhist temple in Colombo is located in Colpetty (Colombo-03) and has a proud history in Sri Lanka.
The temple was established in 1841, founded by the the most venerable Walane Siri Siddhartha Thera, as a temple in parallel to the ‘Parama Dhamma Chethiya Pirivena‘ in Ratmalana, (10 km away from the city of Colombo).
Walukarama Viharaya (temple) acts as a major connecting point amongst the people to build unity, enhance association among diversified groups and to fulfill their requirements of life and spirituality.
One of the purposes for holding this cultural pageant is to promote tourism and to draw the attention of visitors and tourists allowing them to participate in this unique annual event.
A special stage will be dedicated especially for tourists attending this event, and organizers have made provisions to provide access to any tourists staying at Colombo hotels to watch and participate in the festivities, free of charge.
During the festival thousands of local and foreign visitors can assemble to witness the parade and pageantry where the streets of Colpetty are illuminated with threads of fire, color and styled motion, created by flaming torches and light bulb encrusted elephants lead by a massive tusker, on whose back is a gold casket containing ‘The Tooth Relic’ the holiest object to Buddhists all over the world.
Witness ancient and traditional dance performances including up-country and low-country cultural segments. These cultural dimensions highlight the unique features of fashion, dancing, instruments and performance talents of multi-cultural Sri Lanka.
The pageant also bridges the religious relationships between Hindus and Buddhists every year with it’s ritual of respecting Lord Ganesh by carrying his sacred statue to the temple of worship from the famous ‘Kathireshan Kovil’ located in Bambalapitiya (Colombo 4).
This ritual promotes the national unity, peace, understanding and develops religious devotion.
The ‘Esala Perahara of the Walukarama Maha Viharaya’ 2015, attracted more than 5000 local and foreign devotees and was telecast around the world on national television.
The 2016 Perahara hopes to be equally, if not more memorable amongst all those attending the festivities, depicting the glory and pride of Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage.
