In this session, Sallyanne Atkinson discussed her childhood memories of Ceylon, her subsequent career as a trailblazing citizen of Australia and becoming the first female Lord Mayor of Brisbane.
Sallyanne Atkinson’s life began dramatically: her mother was pregnant with her when she was evacuated on the last ship to leave Ceylon before the fall of Singapore, while her father stayed in Colombo with the Ceylon Planters and Rifle Corps.
Returning in 1944, she studied at Bishop’s College and the Royal Naval School and among her vivid memories of that time are the Independence activities of 1948, the first filming of Elephant Walk, which failed when Vivien Leigh had a nervous breakdown and an affair with her co-star Peter Finch (not necessarily in that order!) As Lord Mayor of Brisbane, she received the Freedom of the City from the Mayor of Colombo.
