Mariah is an adventurous little girl who learns an important lesson about connecting with people who are different from her. Author Tahira Sheriff‘s reading will be followed by a workshop with Shimali Perera that allows you to explore the important themes of the book through art.

An introductory session, with Kimaya de Silva, to the African folklore tradition of call and response. Singing, Music and movement are vital components of this form, which focuses on building community ties through storytelling.

Listen to a story about this much loved Sri Lankan folk character as you walk around and recreate the world he lives in. Using your imagination, you will be able enter the world of the story for an immersive experience with Tehani Chitty.
1:45 PM – 2:15 PM: What We Did Today
Participants will share their memories from the day and record them through art in this wind down session guided by art therapist Shimali Perera.
2:15 PM – 2:30 PM: Meditation
You’re never too young to learn about the benefits of meditation and self-reflection in a final short session for the day conducted by drama therapist Tehani Chitty.

Be soulful, outrageous, witty or even just downright silly as you create spoken word narratives with looper artist Larry T. Hill. Learn how to make soundscapes and musical tracks to accompany your story, using just voice and a looping pedal.

Chat with author Deshan Tennekoon about storytelling, and then work with a partner to write your own story.

** Participants must choose one or the other of the following. These are two parallel sessions.
Akimbo’s Creatures : Create animals from Alexander McCall-Smith’s world of Akimbo using recyclable materials with environmental advocate and artist Firi Rahman.
Andare’s Adventures: Learn about aspects of Commedia dell’Arte theatre with Kimaya de Silva and create short plays based on the exploits of Sri Lankan folk favourite Andare, a court jester.
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM Sharing Our Work
A mini exhibition of Akimbo’s Creatures and a sharing of the Andare’s Adventures short plays. This will be followed by a musical theatre performance by the 12+ Age group.

9:00 AM – 4:00 PM: The Power Of One
Spend the day learning about Forum Theatre and Musical Theatre with playwright and theatre director Jehan Aloysius and his Centrestage Productions Theatre Company.
Participants will explore themes of bullying found in Jehan’s musical Rag! and create short original performances which will be shared with the public at 4.00pm.

The Power Of One participants will perform their work after the performances of plays based on Andare’s Adventures by the 8+ age group.
