FGLF 2018 Participant - Author Charulatha Abeysekara

Charulatha Abeysekara was educated at Visakha Vidyalaya and obtained a Civil Engineering degree from the University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka, but opted to be a teacher.

She taught Mathematics and Physics to London A/L students, first for a year at The British School in Colombo, and then at S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia. Today she is a happy homemaker and mother of four, engaging in her favourite pastime – writing.

Charulatha Abeysekara won the 2016 Gratiaen Prize for Creative Writing for her novel, Stories which follows Cheran, a young Tamil student at University in the UK.

The Gratiaen panel appraised her novel as “moving from the normal to the surreal.”

Charulatha is interested in the distinctness of both Sinhala and English as languages for writing, but preferred Sinhala for her diaries because of its “ancient” and “rich” feel.
