We are delighted to welcome Justice Shiranee Tilakawardane to the 2018 Fairway Galle Literary Festival.
Her Ladyship, Hon. Justice (Ms) Shiranee Tilakawardane is a Supreme Court Judge in Sri Lanka.
In addition to the Advocates finals with honors, scholarship award in the Intermediate and Forensic Medicine and Science from the University of Colombo, she has obtained a Fellowship in Human rights, International Law and Intervention from Brandeis International University of Boston, Fellowship on women and peace from the John F Kennedy School of Government Harvard University Women and security Executive Training program and Honorary Doctorate in Law from Williams College, Massachusetts for international work on women and Children’s Rights.
Shiranee Tilakawardane was appointed to the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in 2003. She is presently a Consultant to the Sri Lanka Judge’s Institute and an International and National Arbitrator.
She has been a consultant Commonwealth secretariat, FPA, UNDP, ILO. During her very illustrious career, she was the first Woman State Counsel to the Attorney General’s Department in Sri Lanka appointed in 1978, the first woman High Court Judge, and the 1st Woman Admiralty Court Judge and also the First Woman Court of Appeal Judge, and First Woman President of the Court of Appeal. She was also appointed is also a Chairperson/ Member of the Asia pacific Advisory Forum on Judicial Education on Equality and Human Rights Issues.
She has received many awards nationally and internationally and has been the Keynote speaker at various workshops and seminars in several countries throughout the world and been involved in Judicial Education through the International Women Judges Association on Child Rights and gender issues including issues relating to gender based violence.
Justice Tilakawardane, has also been a key resource person for the National Child Protection Authority and programs conducted throughout the country on Child Rights, Child Protection issues, including conducting judicial education on Child Rights through the Judicial Institute of Sri Lanka with social emphasis of the Laws on Child Exploitation / Child Pornography through internet and cybercrime.
She has been involved in Equality Rights regarding HIV(AIDS), and has been the keynote speaker in many countries in South Asia, Brazil and Australia on Environmental law.
She serves as an Advisory Committee member to the Asia pacific Forum of Gender Rights and is a Member of the Advisory Board of the South Asian Regional Program on Equity(SARI-Q) program to develop the laws and protocols reduce trafficking and violence against women and children in south Asia. She is also a Judge on the panel of International Environmental and Genetic Disputes and Issues, presenting at this conference in Hawaii and a member of the International Panel of Jurists of the International Bureau for Child Rights affiliated with the UN.
Justice Shiranee Tilakawardane also Chaired the International Deliberations of Judges on Child Rights held in Sri Lanka organized by the Bureau of Children’s Rights.
