We are delighted to welcome scholar and author, Professor Nalin Ranasinghe to the 2018 Fairway Galle Literary Festival.
Professor Ranasinghe’s primary area of expertise is Greek philosophy and he has authored a Socratic trilogy: “The Soul of Socrates” “Socrates in the Underworld” and “Socrates and the Gods.”
He has edited a collection of philosophical essays “Eros and Logos” and also completed a prequel to his Socratic trilogy “The Confessions of Odysseus” on Homer’s Odyssey.
He is currently at work on a book on Shakespeare tentatively titled “Bards and Bastards: Inspiration and Illegitimacy in Elizabethan England.”
Apart from Homer, Plato and Shakespeare he has also written many scholarly essays and articles, on topics ranging from the Bible and Greek tragedy to Kant, Nietzsche, Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin.
Nalin Ranasinghe spent the first 23 years of his life in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He received his primary and secondary education at St. Joseph’s College Colombo and, after many years of private study, received a full scholarship to pursue doctoral studies in the US.
Having received his MA in Philosophy from the University of Dallas he then transferred to The Pennsylvania State University where he earned a Ph. D in Philosophy. He is presently Professor of Philosophy at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts where he has taught for seventeen years.
Dr. Ranasinghe has given invited lectures in three continents at venues ranging from The University of Hong Kong and Peradeniya University to Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England.
His other interests include cricket (often staying up well past midnight to watch Sri Lanka) opera, travel and history.
