Sallyanne Atkinson‘s book, No Job for a Woman (Published September 2016 by University of Queensland Press) tells her inspiring story from wartime childhood in Sri Lanka to her first jobs as a journalist and TV personality. Driven to make a difference in her community, she entered local politics and went on to become the first female Lord Mayor of Brisbane. This inspiring story reveals how one woman defied the expectations of a generation.

Sallyanne Atkinson was born in 1942, to an Irish father and Australian mother in Sydney.

She went on to attended Bishop’s College and the Royal Naval School, in Colombo Sri Lanka, then completed her secondary education at St Hilda’s School in Queensland.

Sallyanne Atkinson AO has been a leader in political and business life for over four decades. A trailblazer for working mothers, she built a high-profile national career while raising five children. In 1985 she became the first female Lord Mayor of Brisbane, after defeating the ALP incumbent Roy Harvey. In addition she was the first female Senior Trade Commissioner to Paris, and the former Special Representative for Queensland, in South East Asia.

Sallyanne has been a leader in business and corporate life for over four decades, and is now a distinguished guest speaker, business mentor, and regularly appears on television and radio and contributes to newspapers.

She is a mother and grandmother and lives in Brisbane.
