Afdhel began his career influencing culture and opinion here in Sri Lanka, where he grew up, before moving to London to get a degree in English Literature from King’s College London.

He is the co-author of ‘Good is the New Cool: Market Like You Give a Damn‘ (Regan Arts, 2016) , a provocative manifesto for a bold new model of marketing, which helps brands become a force for good.
Marketing is consistently ranked as one of the least valuable professions to society – but how could it help save the world? This bold new book tracks a shift in the zeitgeist where ‘doing good has become cool’ and proposes a revolutionary new model where ‘great marketing optimizes life’. It consists of interviews with a new generation of marketers, culture creators and leaders in the non profit space who reveal how brands can ‘make money and do good, by harnessing the power of pop culture’. This is a provocative guidebook with 7 Key Principles for marketers and anyone who collaborates with them in this brave new world.
“There is a ‘pipe’ and it’s called consumers attention which is is shrinking in size, and all we are looking to do, is shove more and more content into this pipe. The book is about what happens if you look outside of that pipe …” – Afdhel Aziz.
Afdhel’s prior literary works include ’Strange Fruit’ which was shortlisted for the 2015 Fairway National Literary Prize and his book of poetry ‘China Bay Blues’, which was short-listed for the Gratiaen Prize and won the State Literary Award for Poetry.
‘Strange Fruit’ a novel about love and war in Sri Lanka, was published to critical acclaim.
The story follows Maya, who as a child was forced to flee Sri Lanka following the anti-Tamil riots. As a fiercely independent young woman, she returns to explore the country of her birth, when she falls deeply, serendipitously in love with gentle, romantic Malik. But tragedy strikes when her mother is killed in a terrorist attack, setting into motion a life-changing chain of events. ‘Strange Fruit’ is a lyrical, moving love story – and a mesmerizing journey into the heart of darkness that beats deep within the paradise that is Sri Lanka.
Afdhel resides in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and son.
