Alison Wearing is a Canadian writer and performer.

Her first book was the internationally acclaimed travel memoir, ‘Honeymoon in Purdah’ (2000), an account of a journey through Iran.

Donning the cloak of Islam, Alison Wearing journeys beyond the legacy of revolution, religious fundamentalism and veiled women to find the real people of Iran. Alison offers a startling glimpses into this enigmatic country and introduces us to people who welcome her, feed her and send her off on one adventure after another.

Beautifully written, fresh and fascinating at every turn, Honeymoon in Purdah reveals an Iran rarely seen by outsiders and has been published in 7 countries.

After moving to central Mexico, Wearing shifted focus to the performing arts, singing, recording and touring with world/folk musician Jarmo Jalava, and studying dance and choreography.

Her first solo play, ‘Giving Into Light’ won numerous Canadian theatre awards.

Her most recent literary work, ‘Confessions of a Fairy’s Daughter’, is both a memoir (2013) and a solo play.

Drawing on life experience, it tells the story of growing up with a gay father in the 1980s. The memoir was nominated for the RBC/Taylor Prize for Non-Fiction, shortlisted for the Edna Staebler Award for Creative Nonfiction, and named one of the Top 50 Books of 2013 by Indigo Books.

The stage play has had more than 100 performances since it’s premiere in 2011, and based on her memoir, tells the story of growing up with a gay father in the 1980s. Woven through music and imagery, the comic monologue moves from Alison’s carefree childhood to the moment she learned, at age twelve, that her family was a bit more complex than she had thought.

The show has won numerous awards, including the CBC’s Outstanding Solo Show award and Best Dramatic Script at NYC’s United Solo, the largest festival of solo theatre in the world.
