We are delighted to welcome bestselling Canadian author Cathy Marie Buchanan to the Fairway Galle Literary Festival 2017. (Sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts).

Fairway Galle Literary Festival 2017 - Author Cathy Marie Buchanan.

Cathy Marie Buchanan is the author of 2 bestselling novels ‘The Day the Falls Stood Still’ (2009) and ‘The Painted Girls’ (2013).

Although never having grown up wanting to be a writer, it was during her time working for IBM after graduating with a BSc. (Honours Biochemistry) and an MBA, from the University of Western Ontario, where Cathy Marie enrolled into continued education courses that she hit upon creative writing.

Following a 4 year period of balancing a full-time job during the day, a writing class or bit of crammed-in scribbling in the evening and being mother to 3 young children, Cathy Marie had a handful of stories published in Canada’s finest literary fiction magazines. It was at this juncture that she left her corporate life to take a serious stab at writing.

Cathie Marie’s debut novel ‘The Day the Falls Stood Still‘ was accepted for publishing in Canada by Harper Collins, Hyperion in the US, Random House in the UK and Sperling & Kupfer in Italy within only a week of her sending out her manuscript.

‘The Day the Falls Stood Still’, published in 2009 debuted on The New York Times bestseller list, named an Indie Next pick by the American Booksellers Association, named Best Book of 2009 by Barnes & Noble, and a Canada Reads Top 40 Essential Canadian Novels of the Decade.

The book is a love story centered around the early 1900s inspired by the life of Niagara’s most famous river-man, William “Red” Hill, and chronicles dawn of the hydroelectric power era in Niagara Falls.

4 years later, her 2nd manuscript ‘The Painted Girls’ was sold at auction in the US to Riverhead/Penguin and in Canada to HarperCollins and hit the shelves in 2013 to become a #1 National Bestseller in Canada, and a New York Times bestseller.

The Painted Girls by Cathy Marie Buchanan.

A gripping novel set in Belle Époque Paris (1878) and inspired by the real-life model for Degas’s Little Dancer Aged Fourteen and a notorious criminal trial of the era. It is a tale of two remarkable sisters rendered uniquely vulnerable to the darker impulses of “civilized society.”

‘The Painted Girls’ was also a People Magazine pick and named Best Book of 2013 by NPR, Good Housekeeping and nominated for the Goodreads Choice Awards Best Historical Fiction.

Cathy Marie Buchanan is working on her third novel and lives with her sons in Toronto.
