We are delighted to welcome architect Palinda Kanangara tot he 2017 Fairway Galle Literary Festival.
Palinda Kanangara belongs to ‘The Third Generation’ of Sri Lankan architects. He is an internationally celebrated visionary, vaunted as the vanguard of new architecture in Sri Lanka and one of the AD50 (Architectural Digest magazine’s 50 most influential names in architectural design).
He graduated in Physics from the University of Colombo before following a part-time course in architecture offered by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architecture.
He worked for various architects such as Yamanu Ganeshan, Vinod Jayasinghe and Anura Ratnavibhushana before starting his own practice in 2004.
He was awarded the commendation prize for the ‘Geoffery Bawa Award for Excellence in Architecture’ in 2008, and subsequently received an ‘Award of Excellence from the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects’ in the year 2009.
In addition to building a number of inventive private houses, Palinda has recently completed a Buddhist temple in Kolonnawa and the celebrated ‘Hotel by the Waterfalls’ on the Ramboda Pass.
Located in the cloud forest region of Sri Lanka, with views of amongst the most spectacular waterfalls in Sri Lanka, Palinda’s 27 room, 6 storey hotel is completely integrated into the terrain of the land. It presents a 2 storey facade to the road permeable to the dramatic views of Ramboda falls. Completed in 2012, this construction garnered the Architect of the Year, AYA Awards 2015 and the Award of Merit, SLIA Awards 2016.
Although Kannangara did not work with Bawa, and although his buildings exhibit no superficial affinity to Bawa’s, his handling of space and the connection between inside and outside indicates his debt to the master.
