We are delighted to welcome back award winning Sri Lankan author Shehan Karunatilaka to the 2017 Fairway Galle Literary Festival.

Shehan Karunatilaka was born in Galle and raised in Colombo. He writes advertisements, articles, stories and songs.

His debut novel, ‘Chinaman: The Legend of Pradeep Mathew‘ was published to acclaim in India, the UK and the US, and won the Commonwealth Book Prize 2012 and the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2012.

His novel was also awarded the 2008 Gratiaen Prize and selected as one of 2011’s top debuts by Waterstones UK.

In 2015, a Sinhala language translation by FGLF 2017 participant, writer Dileepa Abeysekara was published as ‘Chinaman: Pradeep Mathewge Cricket Pravadaya‘.

In the novel, the mysterious disappearance of Sri Lankan spin bowler extraordinaire Pradeep S. Mathew preoccupies the narrator, a retired, alcoholic sportswriter. It’s a funny and original tale that deals with lost ambitions – including those of Sri Lanka where, the national sport happens to be – volleyball.
