“I returned convinced that, alongside the huge additional benefit of harnessing the power of music to improve social cohesion, I had seen the template for music education in the 21st century.” Julian Lloyd Webber on his visit to El Sistema Venezuela

Situated in the rural areas of Kurunegala and Mullaitivu, The Music Project aims to change the life trajectory of children through an orchestral programme inspired by El Sistema.

Working with 3 schools in Kurunegala and 3 schools in Mullaitivu, over 400 children learn orchestral instruments and each child has two sessions of musical instruction per week.

The orchestra of children of two diverse communities of post conflict Sri Lanka, meet on many occasions to perform together and music works as the link language.

Through collaboration and working together as an united orchestra the children deliver performances to a high standard and stand for evidence of reconciliation and unity through music.
