Peter Brathwaite

Peter Brathwaite FRSA is a British Barbadian opera singer, writer, and interdisciplinary artist recognised for uncovering suppressed histories through storytelling, performance, and visual culture. A graduate of the Royal College of Music, his alma mater Newcastle University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Music (DMus) in 2023. He creates original works across art forms, including Insurrection (Royal Opera) and Effigies of Wickedness (ENO/Gate Theatre). His collaborative work on Wolf Witch Giant Fairy (Royal Opera/Little Bulb) won a Laurence Olivier Award. His photographic series Rediscovering Black Portraiture, reimagining historical depictions of Black subjects using domestic materials, has been exhibited globally and formed the basis of his first book, published by Getty Publications in 2023. He has authored and presented programmes for BBC Radio 3 and written for The Guardian and The Independent. In 2024/2025, he was a Distinguished Visitor at The Queen’s College, University of Oxford. His next book, Not All of Me Will Die, won the 2025 Eccles Hay Festival Writer’s Award and is forthcoming from Chatto & Windus.
