IN CONVERSATION: ANJAN SUNDARAM on Bad News – Last Journalists in a Dictatorship

IN CONVERSATION: Anjan Sundaram on Bad News.

Date: Friday, January 13 2017.

Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon.
Location: Fairway Pavilion, Galle Fort.

Anjan Sundaram, through conversation and a short audio-visual presentation, will bring to us a gripping portrait of a Rwanda still caught in political and social unrest, years after its genocide.

‘Bad News’ is the story of Anjan Sundaram’s time running a journalist’s training program in the country.

Lurking underneath an orderly state is a powerful climate of fear, which the book vividly captures. During Sundaram’s time in Rwanda, almost every major journalist he trained was either arrested or forced to flee. A brilliant and urgent parable on freedom of expression, and what happens when that power is seized.

This session will have particular relevance to Sri Lankans, who have grappled with the same issue.

“A powerful and shocking memoir… a damning indictment not only of the Rwandan regime, but also of western governments and agencies.” – Sunday Times UK.
