Alison Wearing has been wowing audiences everywhere with her award winning solo show based on her moving memoir about growing up with a gay father in the 1980s, a tribute to the power of truth, humour, acceptance and familial love.
Sure her father had always been unusual compared to the other dads in the neighbourhood: he loved to bake croissants, wear silk pyjamas around the house, and skip down the street singing songs from Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. But, when he came out of the closet in the 1970s, it was a shock to Alison and her family.
This was a time when homosexuality was still a cardinal taboo. Already wrestling with her adolescent search for identity, this was the last thing Alison needed.
‘The humanity in this show is overwhelming. Drag your favourite homophobe along and challenge them not to be moved by the story of this family.’ – The Star Phoenix.
