Travel books come in all shapes and sizes: adventures, ordeals, meanderings or perhaps journeys of personal discovery. But, often, success depends on the writer’s ability to evoke the spirit of the place (usually foreign) in which he or she travels.
So how do we do that? How do we give a place its mystique – or even its mediocrity?
John will be giving tips on research, observation and language. We’ll be discussing a few published extracts too, both delightful and dire. Then it’s over to you. In the exercises, you’ll be marshalling your observations, and recreating that special sense of place. Close up the house, you’re off on a literary journey!
Participants: John Gimlette
John Gimlette’s travel is sponsored by Sri Lankan Airlines.
